Taking Our Food Drive To New Heights!

Cereal TowerSears? Willis? Nope, it’s the ‘Cereal’ Tower!

Inspired by canstruction, we built our own sculpture to launch our annual Food Drive at GPS. Last year, we featured the American flag, which is pretty hard to top, both thematically and design-wise, but we finally arrived at our Cereal Tower concept (based on a famous Chicago skyscraper, one of the tallest buildings in the world).

Thinking Inside the Box!

Cans are a terrific way to package non-perishable food, but we experienced some issues with stability when building using cans. Going higher wasn’t possible without some sort of infrastructure not made of food (i.e. cheating).

The solution was to use only boxed food, allowing us to increase the scale of construction. The Cereal Tower consists of 96 boxes of whole grain cereal as well as 2 tubs of oatmeal acting as the antenna structures on top. It is approximately two feet wide, two feet deep, and over six feet tall!

Cereal, because Breakfast is the Most Important Meal of the Day

Breakfast is the foundation for healthy eating in a person’s day and, especially, for children. According to No Kid Hungry, “Children who eat a nutritious breakfast tend to perform better in school, have a better attendance record, and exhibit fewer behavior problems.”

It is also well known that breakfast also assists in maintaining a person’s health, preventing “obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health problems seen as precursors to heart problems.” Skipping breakfast appears to result in overeating later in the day and making poor diet choices.

Whole grain cereal, along with fruit and milk, provides a balanced meal to start the day!

Their first task was bringing in 18 grocery bags of cereal!

Group Gathers“Thumbs up!”

All the food utilized in ‘Cereal’ Tower along with our Food Drive donations will go the Libertyville Food Pantry, helping to fight hunger in our community. We invite other businesses to join us in supporting their own local food pantries and food banks!
