GPS Reviews: A Fresh Set Of Eyes

A Fresh Set

Situation

An industrial recycling company, serving the community for nearly 25 years, hired GPS for a value enhancement and restructuring project, sharing “the decision to begin this project with a fresh set of eyes on our business was difficult and challenging.”

In the beginning, concerns included whether the cost would outweigh the value of the set objectives, but they were put to rest during the first week that the GPS consultants arrived.

“I think all of management felt a sense of ease, almost as if we had partnered with a force of individuals that would help identify and offer solutions to some of the issues that we had been struggling with, not only on the operational side, but also regarding the strain and lack of communication among management.”

Process

“Immediately, we began digging into financials and operations. There was an array of tools and spreadsheets that helped to identify our current financial position and future goals. We developed five year projections to grow the company to new levels and track ongoing performance.

The project continued, week after week, building upon the core foundation that we had created. Every week brought new tools and objectives. As owners, we were trained in all aspects of achieving excellence, process improvement, inventory control, marketing and sales forecasting, human resources, and production and operations management.”

The four owners were all assigned job titles: Chairman, President, Vice President of Operations, and Vice President of Finance and Human Resources. These new titles identified the strategic aspects of the business that each would impact, going forward.

Result

“The biggest change that resulted from this project was the restructuring of ownership and the improved communications among key managers.

We are held accountable for our actions and we meet as a board to make major decisions, collaborate, and to vote on key issues affecting the business. We discuss current and future issues. In addition, individual managers now bring forward ideas and strategies to solve these issues, by presenting solutions to the board.

One thing that none of the owners expected was to gain so much insight into our business. It is amazing what having an outsider’s perspective, ideas, and past experiences does to offer support and creative ideas to solve business challenges.”

The clients expressed confidence that they now have the knowledge “to sustain growth and profits for future generations,” concluding, “we are hitting the ground running.”   Gary, Chairman; Mark, President; Joshua, VP of Operations; and Mark, VP of Finance and Human Resources
